Material Prototyping

The studio is engaged in ongoing projects which employ digitally fabricated material components, designed using modeling software. Prototypes are produced to test visual and structural effects and to refine design detailing and the integration of these systems into various pre-existing and newly concieved spaces.</description>

Los Angeles, California 2007-2008

A 3.8kW photovoltaic array powers this 1,200 sf graphic arts studio on a property with an expanding family. The design, which evolved as a negotiation between the Los Angeles off-street parking requirements and local zoning mandates, simultaneously satisfies and subverts local code.

Automobile parking tolerances were adopted in the spatial organization and siting of the structure. These are layered within the domestic needs of the ground floor workspace through large custom-made glass doors and a structural slab.

Heat &#38; power requirements for both the structure and the pool are met with the photovoltaic panels on the roof. When the power loads for the studio and pool are not needed, the system provides electrical offsets for the main house and when the property is unoccupied, the electrical power is distributed to the city of Los Angeles.

Los Angeles is host to the largest undocumented immigrant community in the country. As a result, the city benefits from culturally rich urban experiences, but simultaneously inherits increased public and financial obligations.

gHOST CITY embraces the hidden economies of Los Angeles’ undocumented labor and immigrant communities as indispensible contributors to a future green infrastructure for the city. Existing informal economies and currently underserviced rail networks serve as structural mechanisms that address and offset the increasingly politicized financial costs incurred by the host City of Los Angeles.

Undocumented labor networks structure vibrant informal economies throughout the City of Los Angeles each day. Of the many informal economies that exist, this proposal engages three primary sectors and their requisite waste streams:

1. Residential landscaping: grass cuttings &#38; yard waste
2. Domestic work: paper waste
3. Restaurant labor: organic food waste

WASTE STREAMS
The point-of-entry for waste into the gHOST CITY occurs at the southern area of the site where material is sorted and distributed into hopper trains. Once separated into yard waste, paper waste and organic food waste, the raw material is carried to individual composting bins at the re-tooled LACMTA railyards.

A system of large-scale Agitated Compost Windrows and Pyrolytic Biochar Chambers process this daily waste. After completing a seven-week turning cycle in the Windrows, waste is adequately decomposed and ready for a four-week curing period.

REVENUE STREAMS
Hopper trains transport the material north to the Compost Curing &#38; Hydroseeding Facility where the soil is packaged and prepared for outside distribution. Nutrient-rich compost material is a beneficial landscape additive and is ubiquitous with landscaping supplies. When added to seed, it can be used for Hydro-seeding, an application commonly used for large-scale erosion control and freeway landscaping.

The benefits of Biochar are many. It contains high-value carbon sequestration, and when offset against the Chicago Carbon Exchange, this material possesses a measurable and high dollar value. Biochar is gaining popularity in agriculture to increase crop yield and a byproduct of Pyrolysis is bio-fuel, an alternative fuel source for diesel engines which reduces dependency on fossil fuels. Of particular usefulness to Los Angeles is its effectiveness in Wildfire Management Practices.

CULTURE STREAMS
Urban life in Los Angeles is defined geograhpically by its neighborhoods. As a result, communities tend to be focused on their local identities, which to outsiders often remains invisible. The program for gHOST CITY provides a public space for large scale ethnic and cultural celebrations. Many things can happen here. It is simultaneously a parade ground, a festival space and a park. Just as the industrial program of the site quantifies the large scale infrastructural value of immigrant labor, the public program values and promotes the well-being and sustainablility of cultural diversity:
gHOST CITY hosts Los Angeles.

Tagkanic, New York 2009

This renovation breathes new life into a 19th Century Greek Revival Church, transforming it into an Artist-in-Residence studio for the Chelsea-based Zach Feuer Gallery. Located in Tagkanic, NY, the project attempts a simple redirection of the church space from the traditional alignment of the sacred, to a new orientation focused on landscape and the production of art.

The design strategy leaves the exterior mainly intact, preserving the formal proportion and austerity of the Greek Revival architecture. New York State environmental mandates guided the upgrades to the building’s thermal performance. In addition to new recycled denim insulation and dual insulated doors and windows, a closed hydronic heat loop was installed to provide seasonal heating. Structural upgrades were made with reclaimed heavy-timber beams and steel tension rods which replaced termite –ridden roof trusses.

Landscape design focused on a blending of ornamental native meadow grasses, edible plants and fruit trees and gravel groundcover to create outdoor zones throughout the property.

Atwater Village, Los Angeles, California 2002
2003 NEXT LA Award, AIA Los Angeles

Located in Atwater Village, this 40’x150’ single family lot typifies the built context of Los Angeles. Median temperatures range from 93 degrees in summer to 68 degrees in winter. In this sprawling landscape of one and two-story homes, shade is at a premium.

APN: envisions a model for suburban landscapes that addresses site specific conditions (location, physical boundaries, orientation, etc) with a built-in flexibility, providing a framework for the strategic and thoughtful arrangement of grounded and overhead elements.

The design is embedded with both fixed and provisional strategies. The fixed, or material strategy, is expressed through the physically grounded elements deployed across the property and responds to the location of the existing house, material landscape and adjacent lots. The provisional, or ephemeral strategy, reacts to climate, program and/or user. The composite of these two systems creates a specific landscape capable of responding to existing and evolving cycles of use.
